Howard Hughes Medical Institute - CCSSPConnecticut College Summer Students Program
Thanks to a generous grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Connecticut College offered a program to attract and assist potential science students from underrepresented groups such as first-generation college students, women and minorities. The program concluded in 2006. The program introduced these students, starting with the Class of 2004, to the many opportunities and resources available at Connecticut College. Read the feature story about the 2003 program, "HHMI Funds Summer Science at CC." The benefits of the program began during the summer prior to the freshman year when students participated in a three-week program. The Connecticut College Summer Science Program introduced students to the energetic and dedicated faculty who have a strong commitment to mentoring future scientists. During this time, faculty members assisted with fall-semester course selection and future academic opportunities. In addition, students participated in a short course designed to refresh biology and chemistry knowledge. Finally, a session on study techniques, note-taking, goal-setting and how to use and access all the computational facilities on campus was included. Summer room and board as well as science textbooks for the first semester were paid for by the program, and in lieu of summer earnings, a $1,000 summer stipend was provided to each student.
